There is no single ladder after Senior Engineer. You can widen your technical scope, move closer to product, take responsibility for a team, or build some combination of the three. Some roles are a direction, some are the shape that direction takes, and some are simply a different way of working.

Advanced IC (Senior / Staff / Principal Engineer)
Growing the scope of the problems you own, without taking on formal people management.

These do not compete with the three above. Depending on your role and what interests you, they can sit on top of your main direction, or be the dominant shape of your work for a while.

This is usually not the direct next step after Senior. It starts to make sense once you have built real experience in engineering, in product and business, and in leading people or teams.
And you can choose a different way of working
Independent is not a level, and not a branch of its own. You can be an Advanced IC, a Product Engineer or an Engineering Leader and work as a consultant, founder, indie builder or fractional CTO at the same time.
